Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a hormonal disorder that causes an over-production of the male sex hormone androgen, which leads to irregular periods, excess body hair and cysts on the ovaries. PCOS typically develops during the reproductive years and has no cure, but it can be managed with diet and lifestyle changes.

Signs of PCOS

Usually, symptoms of PCOS begin with the first menstrual cycle, but this is not always the case. You may only start to experience symptoms later on.

Typical signs include:

  • Irregular periods that are infrequent or heavy
  • Weight gain
  • Acne
  • Excessive body hair
  • Cysts on the ovaries
  • Hair thinning or early balding
  • Infertility or difficulty falling pregnant

If you are showing signs of PCOS, Dr Hassim will discuss your symptoms and do various assessments to help determine a diagnosis. This may include ultrasound imaging and blood tests to detect androgen levels and cysts in the ovaries.

Managing PCOS

Establishing a treatment plan for PCOS is an individualised experience that Dr Hassim will guide you through. How you manage your symptoms will depend on the severity of your condition, your age and your overall health.

The two main treatment methods include medication and lifestyle changes.

  • Medication: You may need medication to help with ovulation, acne control and other hormonal symptoms of PCOS. Dr Hassim will prescribe the necessary treatments, some of which may be contraceptives.
  • Lifestyle: By keeping a healthy lifestyle of regular exercise and a nutritious diet, you can avoid flare-ups and reduce your symptoms.
