General Check-ups

As women, we have a unique make-up of reproductive organs and functions that require specialised care throughout our lives. General gynaecological check-ups are a way for you to understand more about your body and reproductive health while ruling out any concerns.

When to schedule a check-up

Your very first gynaecological check-up can be a scary thought. However, it's the start of a beautiful journey between you and your wellness. Dr Hassim caters to girls and women of all ages looking for compassionate and quality care concerning their reproductive health.

She recommends having your first check-up and one of the following stages:

  • You are having issues with your menstrual cycle
  • You have become sexually active
  • You are 21 and over

Following your first check-up, you will only need to schedule regular follow-ups every 3-5 years if you have a regular period and no abnormalities. Dr Hassim will discuss your health and future appointments at the end of your check-up.

During the appointment

Dr Hassim is passionate about education and holistic care in her field and aims to get to know each patient and their unique journey. Your check-up will start with an open conversation about your medical history, sexual health and menstrual cycle. This will help her understand your health and lifestyle and make informed recommendations.

Your appointment may differ depending on the reason for your visit; however, in general, Dr Hassim performs the following tests:

  • General assessment of your blood pressure, weight, heart, lungs and urine
  • Breast examination
  • Pelvic examination
  • Pap smear test
  • HIV/STI screening

These tests help determine your overall and reproductive health and find ways to ensure your continued wellness.

Pap Smears

The Pap smear test is a standard cervical screening that promotes the overall well-being of the cervix. During the test, Dr Taheera Hassim uses a special tool to collect cells, which are then assessed to see if they are normal or abnormal. This preventative procedure is an essential part of well-woman care.

When to receive a Pap smear

Pap smears are recommended from when you become sexually active or turn 21 and should be continued every 1-3 years, depending on your age, results and risk factors. Your first Pap smear can feel daunting and uncomfortable, but with compassionate and gentle care, Dr Hassim provides a safe and comforting environment free from judgement.

Receiving a Pap smear

During a Pap smear, surface cells from the cervix are gently removed using specialised tools. The cells are then sent to a specialised laboratory to test for abnormalities. It's normal to experience some minor discomfort, especially if it is your first time having a Pap smear, but Dr Hassim takes excellent care to ensure that her patients feel comfortable and at ease during appointments. She will explain the process in detail and be with you every step of the way.

What your results mean

Results from your Pap smear will be ready within a few days following your appointment, and Dr Hassim will notify you accordingly. Should you have expected results, you can return for your next Pap smear after a year. However, if your results are abnormal, Dr Hassim will suggest a follow-up appointment or referral.

It's important to remember that abnormal results are not always a cause for concern. They can indicate an infection, HPV, sexually-transmitted diseases or cervical cancer. The Pap smear is a preventative test that helps to detect any changes early on so that you can receive the necessary treatment.
